LEE JI YOUNG

A trajectory of infinite communication forged by finite movement

Art sometimes finds its clearest voice precisely where language fails to reach. Lee Ji-young, an actor and the representative of the AM1257 crew, has pursued a path of interdisciplinary art, grafting various visual art forms—such as performance, photography, and media art—onto a foundation of theater. Her work centers on non-verbal communication utilizing the body in ways that transcend the ordinary. She has stated that her creative process is driven by the hope that audiences will step outside their daily routines to engage in new ways of thinking and discover their true selves in the process.

Having begun her artistic career in theater, she felt the need to forge her own unique genre after observing how the words a character wishes to convey could resonate with the playwright, the audience, and society at large. Performance art holds a unique appeal because the presence of a living, breathing human being within the work adds a sense of dimensionality to the entire exhibition space, allowing the space itself to breathe alongside the audience. Another reason she became deeply engaged with body language was the nature of performance itself: unlike painting or photography, it unfolds through movements that are finite, possessing a distinct beginning and end.

I hope that when the audience views my work, they approach it from a subjective and deeply personal perspective rather than through conventional or universal modes of thinking. I want them to engage in independent reflection—even if only for the brief moment they are in the space witnessing my performance. Because the work is abstract and lacks a fixed structure, audiences sometimes find it difficult or feel a sense of resistance; to bridge this gap, I focus on developing a narrative and incorporating elements such as objects and sound into the expression.

Her creative process involves producing various preliminary works to distill and embody the intended message before the final performance. Building on a video project based on the writings of Kim Sang-hyun, she presented the "Person Living in a Cave" performance during the *Methods of Remembering Space* exhibition; in this piece, she entered a small storage space and etched pictographs or drawings using crayons. This work drew inspiration from ancestors who painted cave murals to preserve memories of words and actions that would otherwise vanish the moment they occurred. Additionally, for the *Genderation* exhibition, she created the "Three-Legged Chair" performance—featuring an actor interacting and coexisting with a three-legged chair—to convey a desire for viewing conflict itself with a warm, compassionate perspective.

My team members are the source of my inspiration. I find the most inspiration in our conversations and when we talk about the kind of world we envision. Some of us write, others take photographs, and I use my body to move; we inspire one another to create our work. As long as I have stories to share, I plan to continue my activities until my physical strength gives out.

Lee Ji-young believes that rather than defining her status as an artist, it is more important for everyone to look toward the same goal and steadfastly maintain that direction. Viewing nature as a realm with a uniquely powerful narrative, she has even envisioned collaborations with artists who work with the natural world. Her message—encouraging people to acknowledge and share their unique perspectives rather than dismissing them—conveys the value of individual reflection to the audience beyond the canvas, fostering a profound artistic dialogue. Her journey, driven by the desire to leave her name as a lasting work of art, continues to breathe and thrive within the realm of the extraordinary.
