Art sometimes blossoms in the most unexpected places just as the world comes to a standstill. Amidst the isolation of the pandemic, street performances began in New York City’s Washington Square Park. Although Kanami Kusajima had not initially planned to perform every day, she changed her mind after witnessing the unexpected reaction of the crowd at her first performance. Seeing audience members moved to tears by her dance, she realized that her art held genuine meaning and a positive impact on people. She subsequently resolved to return and dance there daily. Through her performances, Kusajima hopes to help people rediscover the authentic human emotions they often overlook. She has expressed her amazement and gratitude at the fact that dance alone can have such a meaningful impact on so many lives.

The audience’s response to her performances was enthusiastic; the following comments vividly illustrate the profound impact her dancing had on those who watched.

“Thank you so much for the dance today. It really helped me. It was a beautiful, inspiring performance. I felt a multitude of emotions in your dance—it was deep, quiet, and generous.”

"Hello! I watched your performance after seeing some terrible footage from my country's capital. Seeing your expressions helped me manage the difficult emotions I was feeling. Thank you."

“I’ve had a really tough year. I’m a dancer too, and I’ve been in New York since 1998. But I recently lost my husband, and the pandemic was incredibly hard to bear. Then one day, I saw you at Washington Square and was captivated—I just loved what you were doing. Please don’t stop. You are an amazing person."

“I’m struggling with depression and not feeling well , but your performance is giving me so much strength!”

“When I moved to New York, I was under a lot of stress and moving through life in a state of near-numbness. Shortly after the move, I saw you for the first time while walking in the park. It was winter—cold and rainy—yet there you were, dancing. I stopped to watch, and before long, I began to cry. I was deeply inspired by the way you believed in yourself, your art, and your creativity; it was truly beautiful and moving. From the moment I first saw you, I began working hard on my own mental health journey. I didn’t want to feel numb anymore. You inspired me to discover the unique creativity within myself that I could share with the world. Thanks to that inspiration, I’m set to start a new job in Washington, D.C. next February. I want to buy one of your paintings to display in my new home there; it will serve as a reminder to stay true to myself—just as you do—and will also remind me of New York, one of my favorite places in the world.”

Washington Square Park, where Kanami Kusajima dances, is a special place where artists and creators gather. As a street artist, she cherishes every moment spent in the park. Although she initially began by collaborating with the Japanese painter Pinocchio, she now paints with ink and dances on her own. Her collaboration with Pinocchio was a source of great inspiration, enabling her to establish her own unique artistic style. Her paintings are created under the influence of fleeting emotions and the surrounding environment, capturing the distinct essence of each moment. While street performance entails numerous challenges and responsibilities—requiring her to manage everything from the show itself to finances and safety—she admits that these very challenges have made her stronger and deepened her genuine love for the work. The connections she forms with people while performing in Washington Square Park, along with the emotions she conveys through dance, serve as the driving force that keeps her moving forward.

She says she will continue to dance on these streets, though the future remains unpredictable—much like the pandemic that arrived unexpectedly in the past. Kanami Kusajima emphasizes her desire to simply live in the moment and maintain connections with others through dance and art. She believes art is not a matter of competition or evaluation, but rather a deeply personal and subjective experience. If her performances evoke a feeling in the audience, that is enough; and so, she continues to dance on the streets of New York today. Her movements, reaching out to the audience beyond the canvas, cut across the city’s stalled daily life, leaving behind an invisible trail of comfort.
