The Trace of Motion

Art sometimes conceals its essence not in the finished product, but in the physical trajectory taken to reach it. M. Loram, a "performative drawing" artist born in the Canary Islands, first distinguished herself while studying fine arts at the University of La Laguna, where she graduated with honors. She later pursued a master’s degree at Central Saint Martins in London, conducting in-depth research into video art and performative drawing. Operating out of London and Tenerife, she has exhibited and conducted workshops worldwide, a journey that has served to expand the boundaries of media in contemporary art.

My work is defined as "performative drawing," where the performance process—centered on the body, gestures, and movement—results in a drawing. To me, drawing represents an honest trace left behind by movement. I enjoyed blending media, creating works that functioned simultaneously as performance, drawing, video, and installation. This sense of uncertainty and flux reflects both the ever-changing social context and the very essence of artistic creation.

She sought to redefine drawing as something more than a mere visual output, reimagining it through the interplay of space, time, and audience interaction. In particular, participatory performances—where the audience becomes a co-creator of the work—formed the philosophical foundation of her practice, emphasizing the value of collaboration and collective experience over traditional notions of individual authorship. A prime example of this is the performance *You Are It*, presented as part of her solo exhibition *Re-Thinking Trace* at Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. In this performance, participants worked together to create a collective drawing by following specific instructions: walking along a ten-meter-long sheet of paper, moving in circles, stopping beneath a traffic light, and resuming their march when another participant touched their shoulder.

While adhering to established rules, participants were able to exercise a degree of spontaneity—such as by varying their movement speed or the width of the circles they traced. The activity was designed so that everyone would walk across the paper multiple times and interact with various other participants, thereby gaining a tangible, visual sense of the importance of collaboration. The spontaneity and intuition that emerged during this process served as the greatest source of motivation for me to discover new possibilities.

The value of this record, born from collective movement, was recognized through top awards at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2020 and Zealous Stories: Performance 2021. She has indicated that she will continue her work with a focus on performative drawing, persisting in her exploration of breaking down the boundaries between mediums.

Her artistic practice, which sought to embed social messages within an intuitively guided trajectory, has demonstrated to audiences beyond the canvas that art is not merely a unilateral declaration by the artist, but a form of solidarity rooted in collective memory—something created through shared breathing and engagement. Her journey, traversing both space and time, remains an artistic record that charted a map of new possibilities at every turn.
