KIM SUNG BIN aka MADKIM

The Observer of Delusion

Artists sometimes sacrifice their own tranquility to kindle the flame of creation. Sungbin KIM, also known as "Mad Kim," defines himself as "a person who observes people and expresses those impressions through his work." The core driving force sustaining his artistic world lies in the fragmented composition of the self. It is a thorough division of labor between two roles: "Sungbin," who provides the source material for his work as his inherent being, and "Mad," who embodies that source into a visual entity. While "Sungbin" experiences the external world and observes others to collect raw sources, "Mad" sculpturally twists and expresses the fragmented impressions derived from them. His confession that "when Sungbin dies, Mad comes alive" reveals the inevitable mutually eroding relationship between realistic stability and artistic yearning.

"The emotions of <Sungbin> act as a pump that regulates the intensity of the work. At one time, I considered maintaining peace in life and living a long, steady existence to be happiness, but I sensed that my inner yearning vanished whenever I experienced a stable state. Eventually, I reached the conclusion that settling down comfortably for the rest of my life was out of the question. As <MAD>, whose energy source is yearning and lack, becomes more active, the real <Sungbin> is inevitably consumed."

His canvases leave an intense impression, enough to send shivers down the viewer's spine. His past attitude of observing the melancholy of others has evolved into a more delicate and concrete capture of psychology. Portraits of "menhera" individuals consumed by self-loathing, or the precarious gazes of those on the brink of abandonment by love, are the main motifs he focuses on. This stems from his belief that, among the countless subjects of the world, nothing reveals the "fact of being alive" as vividly as a human face. People broken by condensed emotions, and the twisted world viewed by the alter ego known as "Mad," come to life with a rough texture at the tip of his brush.

"The process begins by placing dots on a dry gesso-coated canvas where the eyes will be positioned. I spread texture by spraying and rubbing the still-wet gesso, or create a rough effect using the dry brush technique with a small amount of ink. I collect dark and heavy stories rather than bright and warm narratives, evoking their emotions. In a sense, the stories of others are transformed into a secondary process through the hands of <MAD>."

This rough expressive technique sometimes elicits conflicting reactions among viewers. While some supporters feel a sense of liberation as their pent-up emotions are released through the vigorous brushstrokes, there is also a critical perspective that questions whether his use of depression as a subject matter is a form of deception. However, there is no disagreement regarding the weight of empathy contained in his paintings. This artistic obsession stems from his childhood habit of reading fairy tales solely through pictures before he learned to read, and from memories of drawing while imagining a machine factory to punish those who tormented him. From flash animation and comics to his admission to art school, he has never strayed from the path of art.

"The ideal is to live life leisurely, work with grit, and push quality to the extreme, but reality is not easy. Instead, even when I am tired, I strive to pick up the brush every day with the mindset of an office worker, recognizing that painting is my work and my life. This is because I believe that if you love a particular field, you must prove it through visible results, and that proof is fulfilled solely through effort. Consistency and sincerity are the very foundation that forms an artist's ego."

His artistic ambition is demonstrated by his attempts to overcome the limitations of static painting through painting performances that incorporate elements of performance art, or by his pursuit of harmony through collaborations with other genres. His attempt to intentionally create a sense of bewilderment—as if on the brink of chaos—to shake the audience's senses is his unique means of breathing life into a static medium. His proposal to sublimate ideas into the roughest and deepest sensations is provocative yet filled with firm conviction. Walking his path steadfastly with the goal of working steadily until the age of 60, he unexpectedly wishes to leave behind a flower painting, the Black German Iris, as his final work. It is a projection of a secret wish for future generations to remember him as a different kind of writer than he is today.

"We must live and strive with a clear awareness of what we love. For grit never betrays you."

The fierce grit of <Mad Kim>, who constructs his world by consuming the real <Sungbin>—a man who calls himself rational, cool-headed, and cold-blooded yet willingly sinks into the deepest depression of others—remains as a vivid breath within the rough brushstrokes traversing the canvas.
